This summer, classical violin students are invited to step into the vibrant world of fiddling with our 6-week Introduction to Fiddling Course! Tailored for RCM Level 2–4 and RCM Level 5–8 students, this course offers a fresh and joyful approach to violin playing—without leaving behind the discipline of classical technique.
Why an Introduction to Fiddling?
Fiddling opens up a whole new dimension of musicality, creativity, and fun. It strengthens essential skills for classical playing—like rhythm, bow articulation, and improvisation— while inviting students to loosen up, move with their music, and connect with others. Through this course, students will:
- Learn accessible and fun traditional fiddle tunes
- Explore simple improvisation and ensemble playing
- Practice light choreography to boost confidence and stage presence
- Experience how folk music complements classical training
Meet Your Instructor: Starlene
Star is one of Nirvana Academy’s most experienced instructors, with over 30 years of teaching dedicated to helping students grow in skill and love for music. She holds a Music degree from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and has performed with East Coast artists like the Barra MacNeils and Western legends like Ian Tyson. Notably, she was nominated for New Artist of the Year at the Canadian Dove Awards with her Celtic band An Realt.
Growing up in the Maritimes, Star was immersed in a vibrant fiddling culture where family and friends gathered for kitchen jams, folk tunes, and step dancing. These experiences taught her the joy of music and the difference between simply performing and truly entertaining an audience.
Star brings this spirit to Nirvana Academy’s Introduction to Fiddling course, blending strong violin technique with the fun, community-building, and performance skills that fiddling offers.
Community Busking Finale
To celebrate the end of the course, students will bring their music to life in a real-worldsetting: a group busking event at a local C-Train station or public space! With violin cases open for donations, students will gain performing experience in a playful, encouraging atmosphere. All earnings from the busking session will be shared among the performers.
