Why this matters now

Students often move ahead quickly on their instrument, but theory can quietly fall behind. Later, when RCM requirements become more serious, those gaps can make exams feel much harder than they need to be.

This camp helps students build the foundation early, while the concepts can still be connected directly to the music they are already playing.

Who this is for

Ages 7 and older. Best suited for students working around RCM Violin Levels 1-5 who would benefit from stronger reading, rhythm, keyboard awareness, and theory foundations.

No previous piano experience is required. Students use a digital piano app as a visual learning tool, not as a piano performance requirement.

What students will build

The goal is confidence: reading better, counting better, understanding patterns faster, and feeling less intimidated by future theory work.

Stronger rhythm and counting

Rhythm is one of the biggest reasons students struggle. We will slow it down, organize it clearly, and practice it until it makes sense.

Better note reading

Students strengthen treble and bass clef reading so written music feels more familiar, not like a separate language.

Earlier RCM confidence

Levels 1-4 theory concepts become the foundation for the more demanding work students meet in Levels 5-8.

A more visual way to learn theory

Instead of learning only from books and worksheets, students will explore theory concepts visually using a digital piano app.

When students can see notes, intervals, scales, chords, and patterns directly on the keyboard, abstract ideas become easier to understand and remember.

Up to 15 Alberta high school credits can begin with strong theory foundations.

Students who eventually complete the required Level 8 Practical and Level 8 Theory examinations may be eligible to receive up to 15 Alberta high school credits. This Level 1-4 camp starts earlier, helping students build the reading, rhythm, and theory confidence those future goals depend on.
